• Martín Fiz faces a new challenge: beating the world record in the Master 55 category
Valencia, 11-01-2019 – The 10K Valencia Ibercaja, this year has attained the Bronze Label awarded by the IAAF. It has also become the second best 10K race in Spain (according to REFA). This Sunday more than thirty elite athletes will participate in the race that hope to make the race the fastest 10 000m in Spain.
Searching for new records
In its eleventh year, and with a new circuit, the 10K Valencia Ibercaja hopes to break various records, among which you can find beating the best circuit time, 27:52 obtained in 2017 by the Kenyan Nicholas Mboroto Kosimbei. Up to 6 different athletes are hoping to beat this record. Five of them have already beaten the 28-minute mark. Among them is Ethiopian Abayneh Degu Tsehay that crossed the finish line last year in 28:03.
In the female category there will be athletes from Kenya, Ethiopia, England and Poland that will also run in Valencia City on Running next Sunday. Among these athletes Trihas Gebre stands out hoping to beat the female Spanish 10K record obtained by Rosa Morato in 2009 (Cursa del Nassos Barcelona): 32:06.
The National Athletes
When it come to National Athletes, we look to the participation of Juan Antonio “Chiqui” Perez, athlete of the C.A Caminas Serrano, winner of the 10K road race and of the 10 000m track race in 2017. This athlete is coming to the race feeling enthusiastic and in very good shape after having attained an excellent 28:16 in the recent San Silvestre Vallecana, being the first Spaniard over the finish line. Turning our attention to women Marta Galimany who participated in the previous years 10K Valencia Trinidad Alonso and obtained a finishing time of 33:08 is someone to look out for.
Matrin Fiz’s New Challenge
At the same time, the 10K Valencia Ibercaja will also be the scene where the world marathon Champion (1995) and European marathon Champion (1994), Martin Fiz hopes to complete a new challenge. The athlete will participate in the race giving it his best to try and beat the world record of the 10 000m road race in the Master 55 category.
To achieve this new goal, the Valencian club Cárnicas Serrano will offer Fiz their support. He will be accompanied by athletes from this team. Those entrusted with the task are Nacho Caceres, Luis Felix Martinez, Octavio Sanchis, Julian Ramirez. These runners alongside the athlete Nacho Barranco ,Fiz´s official pacer, will set the pace to beat the registered finishing time 32:02 set by the Brit, Martin Rees in 2008. This will be the second time in little over a year that Fiz faces a new challenge in Valencia City, seeing as on the 2nd of December, at the 10K Trinidad Alfonso, the athlete broke the Spanish 10K record in his category with a finishing time of 32:08.
More than 13 000 runners
The 10K Valencia Ibercaja will take place this Sunday the 13th of January from 9:00 onwards, with more than 13 000 signed up runners (13 124 online sign ups, 30% of them women). The Valencian participation will be outstanding with thousands of independent runners, but also thousands of participants who belong to the various Valencian clubs that will give it their all in the first race of the year in Valencia City of Running.
