• The first race of the year in Valencia, City of Running, opens its Gold Label this January 12 with a cast of elite athletes from around the world
Valencia, 8-01-2020.- The 10K Valencia Ibercaja, which this year will premier the Gold Label of the World Athletics (new name of the IAAF), will inaugurate the annual calendar of races in Valencia City of Running this coming Sunday, January 12th. The race boasts a record number of participants and the best participation of elite athletes in its history.
Thus, this 2020 the event has achieved its record of participation with 14,481 registered runners, a figure that will increase with the additional registrations in Feria del Corredor (Runner’s Fair), in a XII edition that also seeks to beat the record of finishers as well as get closer to its goal #LaMitadMásUna (50%plus1 women running). These numbers were revealed during the presentation ceremony that took place next to the start and finish areas of the race in the Paseo de la Alameda and which brought together institutions, collaborators and sponsors, as well as non-professional runners.
The thousands of athletes who will take the start at Alameda from 9:30am onwards will do so following a wide range of world-class elite athletes on a fast and flat circuit whilst enjoying the unique services of a race. Once again, Chimo Bayo will be in charge of livening up the start of the ‘Hu-Ha!
The director of the event, Álex Aparicio, said that the objective “is to continue taking steps to consolidate the 10K Valencia Ibercaja among the best races in the world, without losing our innovative character by offering different services, always thinking of non- professional runners who continue to trust this race and support us with increasing participation”. “We have reached our most numerous and ambitious edition with the debut of the Gold Label”, he added.
In addition, he highlighted that there is also rising presence of runners from other countries. This year “we have the participation of athletes from more than 40 different countries, with those from the United Kingdom and France being the most numerous after Spain. We are proud that more and more runners want to come to Valencia to run in our events”.
Also, the Director of Ibercaja in the province of Valencia, José Gil, has indicated that in Ibercaja “we accompany people, not only in their financial decisions but also in other very important moments of their lives such as sports and leisure. This race is a project that inspires us and thrills us. It promulgates the values that we defend and with which we feel very comfortable: closeness, perseverance and effort”.
The running party
This January, the Paseo de la Alameda will host a running party with the celebration of one of the fastest 10K in the world and other parallel events for children and adults – Mile, Kids Mile and 10Kids Hyundai Autiber Motor – so no one should miss it.
The director of the Trinidad Alfonso Foundation, Elena Tejedor, commented that “we value the growth of the 10K Valencia Ibercaja, but not only in the number of runners, but also in the quality of the athletes who will be running on Sunday. This 10K was Top5 in the world in 2019, and after the farewell to the 10K Valencia Trinidad Alfonso last December with a world record, it now takes the most ambitious challenge of positioning Valencia City of Running as a destination to run fast in all distances”.
Finally, the Councillor for Sports, Pilar Bernabé, has taken advantage of her speech to emphasise that the city “starts the year 2020 as the previous one ended, practising sport and filling the streets with runners. And it does it in the best possible way, because this 10K event is already among the best in the world and this year it has its first IAAF Gold Label, beating records with its more than 14,400 participants and many of the best athletes in the distance worldwide. This is the first event of almost 150 sports events that our city will enjoy over the next 12 months.
The solidarity part of the event
This year’s solidarity entity is the Pedro Cavadas Foundation, to which the runners were able to donate 3 euros when they registered. Thus, 2,003 participants have chosen to make this solidarity donation, thanks to which more than 6,000 Euros have been collected to be used for the humanitarian surgical campaigns carried out by the Foundation. In addition, the collection of the registration (1 euro per bib) of the children’s races will be entirely destined to Duchenne Parent Project Spain.
