Agnes Jebet breaks the world record at the 10K Valencia Ibercaja with 28:46

Valencia, 14-01-24.- A historic start of the year of running in Valencia. The 10K Valencia Ibercaja has lived a historic day achieving the world record in the women's 10K with an exciting entry into the finish line of the Kenyan athlete Agnes Jebet, who has stopped the clock in a stratospheric 28:46.

Agnes Jebet beats the World Record held until now by the Ethiopian athlete Yalemzerf Yehualaw (29:14 - 10K Facsa Castellón, 2022). Also, Jebet has achieved the women's 5K World Record, equaling the mark of the also Kenyan Beatrice Chebet, 14:13.

"I am very proud. To go under 29 minutes... I didn't expect to do this time. The course is awesome. I came with the goal of improving my personal best. I'm very happy, and now I'm already thinking about the Paris 2024 Olympic Games," said Agnes Jebet on her arrival at the finish line.

It is the first time in the history of athletics that a woman has run the distance under 29 minutes. In this feat she is also accompanied by the second classified, Emmaculate Anyango Achol, who has entered the finish line in 28:57. Valencia thus writes a new page in the history of athletics with two women under 29 minutes. The third athlete was Lilian Kasait (29:32).

The 10K Valencia Ibercaja, which has had almost 11,000 popular runners at the finish line, thus achieves the double of World Records. The women's world record is added to the men's record held by the race since the 2020 edition with the 26:24 of Rhonex Kipruto.

In the men's race, the first three finishers were all under 27 minutes. The overall winner was the Ugandan athlete Jacob Kiplimo, who stopped the clock in 26:48. He was joined on the podium by Birhanu Balew (26:57) and Peter Mwaniki (26:59).

Spanish record for men

But the day also brought another historical record with the Spanish Record of Abdessamad Oukhelfen who has entered the finish line in 27:44, lowering by four seconds the time held by Toni Abadía since 2018. The first Spaniard was Águeda Marqués, who entered the finish line in 31:58.

"I want to thank Valencia, all its people and the public. After a complicated summer, today I have achieved an accomplishment for which I am very happy.I'mstill trying to improve in every training session in preparation for the OlympicGames," said the new Spanish 10K record holder.

Populars enjoy the first race of the year in Valencia

All these records have been achieved in a 16th edition of the 10K Valencia Ibercaja, in which a total of 10,913 popular runners have reached the finish line after enjoying the streets of Valencia Ciudad del Running and flying through the fastest circuit in the world in men and women. The thousands of runners, who took the start to the rhythm of Chimo Bayo's Hu-Ha! from the Paseo de la Alameda, inaugurated the running year in style.

5K Valencia Vamos and 10Kids Valencia Quirónsalud

Sunday's sports day started with the 5K Valencia Vamos, the 5K Valencia Vamos, the 5 kilometer pre-race that this year celebrated its 2nd edition starting from the Puente de las Flores and has brought together nearly 1,000 runners at the finish line of the Paseo de la Alameda.

The absolute winners of this 5 km race were Mohamed Warsame and Manon Guillermin, who crossed the finish line in 14:32 and 15:59, respectively.

In addition, to close a morning full of athletics in the city of running, the little ones have also enjoyed their races with the 10Kids Valencia Quirónsalud. The children's races have had about 800 participants, who have been animated by Joxe Fernandez and have run a circuit of between 300 and 1500 meters in the same Paseo de la Alameda, always guided by the official race car of Hyundai Autiber Motor and with winners medal included.
