January 11, 2024

The race will be held this Sunday, January 14, starting at 9:30 am with 13 different starts. The 5K Valencia Vamos, with 1500 runners, and the 10Kids with 800, will complete the day.

The 10K Valencia Ibercaja, which has sold out its available bibs, will celebrate its 16th edition this coming Sunday, January 14, inaugurating as every year the calendar of races in Valencia. And it will do so by offering a running party to the 14,000 registered runners.

The participants, who will once again enjoy the best 10K in Spain and the fastest in the world to the rhythm, as has become a tradition, of Chimo Bayo's Hu-Ha!But a few minutes before the starting gun, the race will pay tribute to the recently deceased Carmen Valero, the first athlete to represent Spain in the Olympic Games and twice proclaimed world cross country champion.

These data have been advanced in the presentation ceremony, which took place at the headquarters of the Association Against Cancer in Valencia, solidarity entity of this edition, and which was attended by, among others, the Councillor for Sports of the City of Valencia, Rocio Gil; the provincial director of Valencia Ibercaja, José Gil; the director of the Trinidad Alfonso Foundation, Juan Miguel Gomez; and the president of the Association, Tomas Trénor.

During the meeting, the director of the 10K Valencia Ibercaja, Alex Aparicio, has detailed the dynamics of this year's outings, as it involves significant changes and improvements compared to last year's edition.

"We have organized - recalled Aparicio - up to 13 different starts from 9:30 am, and we have recovered the two lanes of the Paseo de la Alameda, which will be operational up to and including the 8th start. The first start will be for elite and sub-elite athletes, and from there the participants will start every few minutes and will be ordered according to the expected or accredited mark during the registration process".

For his part, José Gil, provincial director of Valencia of Ibercaja, main sponsor of the race, stressed that "it is a great pride for Ibercaja to accompany Valencia in a national and international benchmark event. It is another example of our commitment to this territory, for what its celebration entails for this wonderful city, and also for what the practice of this sport means for the well-being and health and for the values it promotes".

"This year we are, moreover, especially excited, since 200 Ibercaja colleagues are participating in this event on the occasion of the celebration of the XXVIII Interprovincial Athletics Championship of the Bank. And, of course, because of the solidarity nature of the event, which thanks to all participants will contribute to the commendable work done by the Association Against Cancer of Valencia," added José Gil.

Among the best in the world

In terms of sports, Alex Aparicio stressed that the race "will feature more than 100 elite athletes from more than twenty different nationalities in search of their best marks in the city of running". As for the female elite, the Kenyan athlete Agnes Jebet Ngetich will attack the 10K world record trying to improve her best time achieved in Lille (France) in 2023, when she was only 12 seconds behind the world record held by Yalemzerf Yehualaw (Castellón 2022, 29:14).

As for the participation of elite male athletes, "the race will feature the great Ugandan athlete Jacob Kiplimo, current world record holder in the half marathon". Nationally, Abdessamad Oukhelfen in men and Águeda Marqués in women, "arrive at the 10K in a very good shape and with great ambitions".

And although we can experience great moments in terms of records, the most important thing," he said, "is that the 14,000 popular runners enjoy the most of their 10K party in the city of running".

On the other hand, Aparicio highlighted the fact that World Athletics has placed the 10K "in the Top 5 of the best world competitions in 2023". It is a ranking that is made according to criteria of quality of athletes and results or others such as participation. It evaluates all the races in the world, except for marathon distances, which have their own ranking. Likewise, "in this ranking, in terms of the women's category, the 2023 race was the best in the world. In men, we were third.

Running year kicks off with the 10K

The Councilor for Sports of the City of Valencia, Rocio Gil, said that this event "has become an unmissable event for popular athletics in our city and Valencian sport. Not only has managed to be the fastest 10K in the world where the best athletes come to get their best marks, but also makes available to the popular athletes of Valencia a test of the highest level in organizational quality standards".

And good proof of this," he added, "is the high female participation in both the 10K (33%) and, above all, in the 5K (58%), being the city's race with the highest female participation in percentage terms. Finally, I would like to highlight its important role also at a social level, with its solidarity contribution to the Association Against Cancer and, of course, with the celebration of its 10Kids race for the little ones".

Also during the presentation, the president of the Association Against Cancer in Valencia, Tomás Trénor, wanted to thank the race for thinking, once again, in the Association to be solidarity entity this year. "We would also like to thank, of course, the runners who have made an extra contribution to donate to the fight against cancer for their solidarity".

"It is a pride for the Association to be part of these initiatives," said Trénor, who added that "sport and health is something that is part of the DNA of the Association. Throughout the year we encourage people to do sport and join in against cancer and for research with our 100% solidarity RunCancer circuit. And today we could not be prouder to welcome all of you to present this great race, which in this edition also adds up against cancer".

5K Valencia Vamos and 10Kids Valencia Quirónsalud

In this edition, the 10K Valencia Ibercaja will celebrate for the second consecutive year its parallel 5K. The 5K Valencia Vamos will have 1500 participants, limit set in the race, who will start from the Puente de las Flores at 8:30 am and will cross the same finish line as the main event before runners take the start of the 10K from the two roads of the Alameda.

After the celebration of both races, 5K and 10K, 800 young runners, from 0 to 16 years old, will be able to enjoy the day by joining the 10Kids Valencia Quirónsalud. The children's races, with the same start and finish line as the 10K, will start at around 11:45 am from the Paseo de la Alameda with distances ranging from 300 to 1500m.
